Simon McLean sat down with Leela Soma to discuss her life, books and career. Leela covers the inspiration behind her book Murder at the Mela – available here – and also her previous books Bombay Baby and her poetry collections.

Leela reflects on her life in Scotland and her dual Scottish/Indian heritage. She also gives an insight into her experiences in India as a child and the impact this had on her writing.

Murder at the Mela is examined in detail, as Leela and Simon delve into the themes of racism in the book, and the alternative portrayal of police officers and inspectors compared to otherwise stereotypical representations in fiction.
