As an independent publishing company doing the work that we do purely for the love of good, Scottish inspired literature, we support any and all forms of literary output – particularly the independent ones! Therefore, today we seek to encourage you to visit some Glasgow bookstores that lie, just like us, a little under the radar. Clear your schedule for a day and go on a book hunt, taking in the Glasgow culture while you stock up on some new reads!
- Voltaire and Rousseau
For over 40 years, this second-hand bookshop has been woven into Glasgow’s West End, situated on Otago Lane. The books are placed in an entirely random order, filling up every possible space there is to fill, meaning you’ll have the pleasure of searching every nook and cranny to find something for you! Running since 1972, the store has newly opened up online, so it continues to fight against the rising tide of modern opposition. Give this shop a try and you’ll be able to contribute to keeping it going even longer!
- Caledonia Books
Sitting amongst the plentiful cafes and coffee shops, this second-hand book shop is on the busy Great Western Road. It opened 30 years ago, specialising in antique, rare, and second-hand books. Not only can you buy but sell, so if you have finished books lying around that could be better used in the hands of another, pop in and see if Caledonia Books could make use of them!
- Hyndland Books
Suitably named, this shop sits on Hyndland Road, originally set up by two former librarians. The 2 owners are well known by locals, as they have been building a relationship with their shoppers for the past 20 years. Become a new face and stop by yourself! With no specific genre focus, you can find a wide variety of book-shelf fillers.
While we have named a few recommendations, there are plenty more where those came from! Get online and do your research, branching out to see what the rest of Scotland has to offer. It’s people like you who keep independent businesses running! Tweet us if you have any of your own recommendations that we can share with our followers.
