What type of writer are you?
Historical fiction, I have taken quite a lot of time to write books. I do a lot of research; spend a lot of time checking timelines to make sure it works it. I read a lot of factual books, but also a lot of fiction from that period. “Goodbye Berlin” and quite a few other factual books to get the details right – the streets of Berlin changed several times during the war, so you want to get that right.
What kept you motivated in the process?
As long as I think I’ve got a strong story in my head, the main motivation is to get the story told. I also enjoy reading history, so I’m quite happy reading and researching for it as well.
Which authors are you inspired by?
John Steinbeck, Graham Greene, Bob Dylan
Any new projects in the horizon?
I finished a crime novel, and am working on another crime novel set in Spain. I didn’t want to write a crime novel initially, but it kept leaning towards it. The first is a Glasgow set detective novel, but the Spanish novel won’t have a detective driving the plot, it will center on an author going to Spain.
